Nutcracker Cookies

Nutcrackers – never quite understood them. The poor things always look angry, scared, or sad. Seriously, have you ever seen happy nutcracker?

We are heading to California in a few days, so I felt a bit rushed. Looking back, I wish I had taken my time painting them. Even so, I'm still pretty happy with how they turned out. Every year the holidays sneak up on me. The problem is, if I bake my holiday cookies way in advance as not to feel rushed, we will be eating Christmas cookies at Thanksgiving... Maybe that's not such a bad thing.

Side note: Before when I painted with the edible gold dust, I mixed it with a high proof vodka that would evaporate quickly. However, I found that it ate through the royal icing too much and left an odd texture. This time, I tried mixing the gold dust with some yellow and brown food gels instead. It doesn't have quite the same metallic look, but I think it worked just fine. I'll have to keep experimenting to get the exact color I'm looking for.
